  Training for Good Customer Service

Although an employer may hope that his or her employees will naturally provide good customer service, some training will inevitably be necessary to cover all the bases of good customer service. Training is also necessary in order to maintain good customer service and to keep up with the ever-changing trends of the service industry while adding to the basic building blocks of friendly and efficient customer service.

For employees who have not previously worked in the service industry, good training is especially important. While service industry employees may be friendly, they may not be knowledgeable of the various aspects of providing good quality customer service. For example, they may not be aware of the company’s policy for handling a difficult or angry customer, or for how to direct customers whose needs cannot be met by that company alone. Thorough training can mean the difference between bringing back a customer and sending a customer in search of another avenue of service.

There are many different methods of training employees to provide good customer service. The most common way of teaching employees is providing them with an orientation meeting or seminar or offering hands-on training. Many retail companies require their new employees to attend an orientation meeting. These meetings can last anywhere from one hour to all day. Or employers may request that their employees attend a certain number of training shifts before officially beginning their positions. This is how many restaurants train their employees to provide good customer service. Many restaurants hire new employees and then require them to shadow more seasoned employees in order to see the customer service the company expects in action.

Many companies will also require their employees to fill out packets of information and to watch videos about customer service. These packets and videos may cover different scenarios that may arise in the service industry and will direct employees as to how to best handle these situations in accordance to the company’s policies. There are many different ways in which a company may choose to train its employees. All of these training methods will eventually lead to the same building blocks of great customer service, ensuring customer loyalty to that particular company.
